As a coastal city on the North Shore of Massachusetts, Salem is rich with history and recognized as a significant long-standing New England seaport. The city and much of its architecture predate the American Revolution. With a current population of more than 40,000 residents, Salem in Essex County serves as both an inviting tourist destination and charming residential community with rich neighborhoods that include Pickering Wharf, Witchcraft Heights, North Salem, South Salem, Salem Neck, Salem Willows, Downtown Salem and McIntyre Historic District.
Situated just north of Boston, Salem is known for its historical attractions and thriving nightlife. Residents and visitors can commute to Boston’s North Station along the MBTA commuter rail. With a 22 minute express train and 30 minute regular train to Boston’s North Station, Salem has convenient and quick access to Boston’s metropolitan area. This provides Salem residents a plethora of additional work, entertainment, health care and education opportunities.
First settled in 1626, the city has an extensive maritime heritage and colorful past involving the Witchcraft Trials of 1692. For hundreds of years, the city has had an active working port filled with boutiques, shops, wharfs and maritime related stores. The brick business fronts and clapboard or cedar shingled homes along the coastline define the community’s New England style.
While Salem is recognized for its seventeenth century witch trials, they actually began in neighboring Danvers when it was previously known as Salem Village. Residents and visitors can enjoy the infamous Witch House at Essex and North Streets, and the Peabody Essex Museum containing hundreds of original well-preserved documents detailing the trials. Of the 24 individuals connected to the Salem witchcraft trials, five died in prison and 19 were hung in Salem Town on Gallows Hill.
Nathaniel Hawthorne, author of The Scarlet Letter, was a lifelong resident of Salem. His final resting place is the Old Burying Point on Charter Street.
Salem has an expansive educational system including seven elementary schools/charter schools, a middle school and high school, all focusing on core academic skills, technological literacy and habits of learning. The community’s school system encourages parental involvement and open communication with educational staff and administration.
The students are encouraged to take advantage of every educational opportunity to realize their full potential as active responsible individuals. Educators teach the children to communicate and collaborate effectively to solve problems, think critically and remain active as global and local citizens.
Salem also offers two charter schools, The New Liberty Charter School and Salem Academy School and for higher learning there is Salem State University.
Salem Massachusetts is known as the North Shore’s hub and is home to the First District Court of Essex County (Salem District Court), the Peabody Essex Museum and Salem State College. The MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) bus line runs through Salem, transporting commuters to the area’s subway lines and commuter rail systems. The public transportation system is wheelchair accessible, offering visual/audio automated announcements to make commuting easy for individuals with a hearing or visual impairment.
During the warmer months from May to October, the Nathaniel Bowditch catamaran ferry travels from Boston to Salem. The city has a bike sharing program known as Salem Spins, providing free of charge bicycles to commute around the city. In addition, electric car operators have access to eight charging stations throughout the community with some located at the South Harbor Garage and Museum Place Mall. As a pedestrian-friendly community, the city of Salem attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists every year.
The city of Salem provides several public services including fire protection for every resident and commercial building around-the-clock. With nearly 100 paid professional firefighters, the SFD (Salem Fire Department) responds to thousands of emergency calls every year, operating four fire stations positioned throughout the community.
The city also provides Harbor and 24 hour police protection, road and park maintenance, snow removal and curbside refuse pick up.
Salem provides phenomenal opportunities for working, playing and living. The area is known for its dining options, eclectic shops, world-renowned museums, famous attractions and historical architecture. The community’s water resources, parklands, beaches, playgrounds and open spaces provide healthier lifestyle choices. It is an ideal location when purchasing a home.
